BAD NEWS (2013 – 83rd Legislature)
SB 460 Relating to training for public school teachers in the detection and education of students at risk for suicide or with other mental or emotional disorders and the inclusion of mental health concerns in coordinated school health efforts
IF YOUR CHILDREN ATTEND PUBLIC SCHOOL BEWARE!!!!!!!
This bill requires that teachers receive “instruction in detection of students with mental or emotional disorders.”
This means your child is at risk of being defined as “at risk” or identified as mentally ill by their teachers and may be referred for mental health or behavioral health screening. It also expands the duties of local school health advisory councils to include policies, procedures, and strategies besides curriculum of health classes and allows them to add a “mental health concerns” component to your child’s health education classes.
What this means is, depending on the curriculum, your child may be taught signs and symptoms of mental health issues and then in turn think they are mentally ill. If a child self-identifies to a teacher or school employee that they think they may be mentally ill, the school has effectively SKIPPED the mental health screening with parental consent. Current law requires parental consent before ANY screening can be done on your child, however, with the passing of this dangerous legislation, school districts (and drug companies who pushed it), have created a way to circumvent your parental rights!
